Ajwain Plant – Trachyspermum ammi

Also known as the Carom plant and Ajowan, your Ajwain plant is an annual herbaceous plant that is native to the land of India and Pakistan.
Ajwain plant is a medicinal plant which is been used in the Ayurvedic system for ages for stomach ailments including flatulence and indigestion due to their antispasmodic and carminative properties. Your Ajwain plant oil contains thymol, p-cymene, and gamma-terpinene along with more than 20 trace compounds.

General

Growing your Ajwain plant is quite easy. Their leaves are round in shape and look extremely beautiful when grown in bunches and clusters. You can also grow your Ajwain plant in water as well.

Your plant can be propagated by the cuttings from the original plant and require regular cutting and trimmings to maintain its look and they can grow up to 8 - 12 inches height as an Indoor Plant.

Sunlight

You must plant your Ajwain Plant in an area with Full sun to partial shade. In the absence of ample Sunlight, the leaves of your plant will turn dark green instead of jade green.

Watering

Your Ajwain Plant will prefer moist soil, but not a soggy one. You can water your plant once every day during summers. Over-watering will damage the roots of the plants and can eventually kill your plant.

However, during the winter season, water your plant once every two-three days when the top layer of the soil is dry for better growth. But make sure that the soil does not become too dry during the watering.

Soil

Your Alocasia Plant prefers an aerated, lightweight, and well-draining potting mix or crumbly loam.

Use one part soil, one part perlite or coarse potting sand, and one part peat.

Fertilizer

Your Ajwain plant does not require to be feed to thrive but it will reward you with faster growth if you do so. You can use a soluble, slow-release fertilizer during summers with a 10-10-10 NPK ratio for your plant.

You can also consider adding natural fertilizers like compost tea and cow dung manure to your plant once every month during the growing season.

Reduce the use of fertilizers during the winter season to once every two months or it may dry and burn it.

Toxicity

Ajwain plant contains furocoumarin in all parts of the plant that can cause primary photosensitization in your pets. Also, a pregnant woman should avoid consuming the plant a well.

Additional Care

Your Ajwain plant may require support after attaining a height of 5 inches or their stems may start leaning down towards the soil.

When your plant attains a height of 6-8 inches, trim the stems of your plants and remove the deadhead flowers and leaves from the plant. It will encourage fresh growth and will make your plant bushier.

Aphids: Aphids will suck the nutrients from a plant that will mottle and curl the leaves o the plant- You can spray your plant with cold water and neem oil to remove them.

Powdery Mildew: They destroy the heavy foliage of your plants- Remove the affected areas and put your plant in a brighter area by keeping the leaves dry.
