Hoya Carnosa | Hindu Rope Plant Care

General

The Hoya carnosa is a semi-succulent, perennial, vine-like variant of the Hoya carnosa species. These slow-growing houseplants can survive for several years and grow up to 20 feet long. The thick, curly, and crowded leaves resemble a rope earning the name Hindu Rope Plant and Krinkle Kurl.

When hung from a basket, the stems can reach lengths of several feet in time. If grown around a wire loop, the length may depend on the size of the wire.

With proper care, they produce beautiful clusters of star-shaped flowers made up of about twenty small pinkish-white flowers. The waxy, porcelain-like flower clusters bloom late spring & early summer.

Sunlight

Your Hoya Compacta grows best in bright, indirect sunlight. A south-facing window is the perfect spot to place your Hindu Rope, although it can adjust to east or west facing windows as well.

They can survive in low lights as well, but their growth will be slow and they may not produce any flowers.

Watering

Deeply water your Hoya Compacta Plant when the soil is almost dry. This would amount to watering it once or twice a week in the growing season. And once every few weeks in fall and winter.

Additionally, when the humidity levels are low, you can mist it’s leaves to preserve the waxy, glossy appearance

Good drainage is crucial for the Hoya Compacta

Soil:

Your Hindu Rope requires a loose, well aerated and fast draining potting mix. An equal combination of perlite, orchid bark, and peat will ensure good drainage.

Fertiliser:

Feed your Hindu Rope with a water-soluble liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. To encourage blooming, choose a fertilizer high in potassium

In the growing seasons, fertilize your Hoya Compacta plant every two to three months. Do not fertilize the plant in fall and winter.

Toxicity:

Your Hoya Compacta is considered non toxic and suitable for spaces with pets and children.

Additional Care Information:

Although your Hindu Rope is not prone to pests, watch out for aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs & scale insects.

Do not remove the small leafless stubs called spurs that appear on the plant as this is where the new flowers develop.

Troubleshooting:

Falling leaves – Could be due to overwatering –

Falling buds – Your plant soil may be too dry or too wet

Flowers not blooming – Indicates that your Plant may not be receiving enough nutrients. It could also mean that your plant is not getting enough sunlight. Move it to a brighter spot!
