Iresine Herbstii, Blood Leaf Plant

Iresine Herbstii or Iresine Pink, commonly known as Bloodleaf, Chicken Gizzard, or Beefsteak Plant is a Herbaceous Perennial native to Brazil. Their extraordinary foliage is a visual treat to those who find common green in houseplants a bit plain. Their beautiful bright red glossy leaves with red veins will be the first thing noticed by the guests in your home.

General

  • As a potted plant, it can grow up to 12 to 18 inches tall.
  • The Iresine Herbstii Aureoreticulata plant prefers a frost-free climate.
  • The Iresine Herbstii may produce small white flowers. The flowers are unremarkable and the plant is usually grown for its striking foliage

    • Sunlight

  • Your Iresine Herbstii will grow in full sun, semi-shade or shade. Although the brightest colors are generally obtained in stronger light.
  • The smaller plants tend to thrive in partial shade. But as they grow they can tolerate more light.
  • When indoors like living room or bedroom, place your plant near a bright or south-facing window.
  • The Herbstii plant thrives in warm environments with temperatures between 18℃ to 27℃. It cannot handle low temperatures below 13℃ or frost.

  • Your Iresine Herbstii requires its soil to be moist at all times. Deeply water your plant when the top inch of soil begins to dry.
  • Frequent watering especially in warm or hot weather is preferred
  • A 2 or 3-inch layer of organic mulch can help retain moisture in the soil.

    • Soil

  • When grown Outdoors, your Herbstii prefers organically rich, well-draining soil. It will tolerate most soil types.
  • When growing your Herbstii Indoors, use a loamy, soil-based potting mixture.

    • Fertilizer

  • Your Herbstii requires fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks in the growing season. For it to flourish choose a liquid fertilizer that is high in nitrogen.

    • Toxicity

  • Your Herbstii is completely safe, non toxic and suitable for spaces with pets and children

    • Additional Care

  • Using 2 to 3 inch layers of Organic Mulch will prevent the moisture from evaporating.
  • Your Herbstii has a low tolerance for cold, dry air. Therefore, frequently mist and provide adequate heat during winter
  • Herbstii is not prone to serious insect or diseases, though it is susceptible to powdery mildew. Watch out for aphids and spider mites
  • Placing your Iresine Herbstii in insufficient light, may result in it getting leggy as it tends to stretch towards the available light
  • It is advisable to pinch off flower buds, as they can consume energy that would otherwise go toward growing dense foliage.

  • Brown leaf margins and Drooping leaves - This is due to inadequate moisture.
