Variegated String of Hearts, 3 inch Pot

A South African native, the String of Hearts aka Ceropegia Woodii or Chain of Hearts is a fast-growing tuberous, evergreen perennial plant. The Instagram worthy sprawling vines hang down several feet once they are mature making it a visual treat. With its distinct heart-shaped fleshy leaves and an attractive marbled pattern, this unique and gorgeous trailing succulent-like plant is sure to steal anyone's heart.

General

The String of Hearts is a popular choice as a houseplant gift on special occasions like Valentines day.

They can reach up to 12 inches long in their natural habit.

This ornamental vine is great for planting in hanging baskets or in pots on shelves or window sills. It's lantern-shaped flowers are usually a pale magenta colour. They tend to bloom late summer and fall.

Sunlight

Your ceropegia will thrive in bright indirect sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can cause it's leaves to wither.

If the leaves are wider apart and lighter in color with less marbling, then your plant requires more sunlight. When the leaves are dark green with distinctive silver or light green markings, it indicates it is getting proper light.

Watering

In order to grow fast and remain healthy, use the Soak and Dry watering method. Only water your String of Hearts plant when most of the soil has dried out.

In summer, you may have to water your drought-tolerant plant weekly. Reduce the watering frequency in winter.

It is vital to ensure proper drainage, as overwatering or standing water can lead to root rot.

If your home is especially humid, you can water the houseplant vine less often.

Soil

Your Senecio rowleyanus Plant like any succulent requires well-draining soil containing a good amount of perlite and sand. Your plant can use succulent potting soil, although sandy soil is preferable

For Repotting, use a combination of 3 part good potting soil and 1 part sharp sand. Or you could also use 35% River sand + 15% Cocopeat + 35% Organic manure/Vermicompost + 15% perlite

Fertilizer

Fertilize your String Of Hearts once a month with a half-diluted houseplant fertilizer during their active growth period (May - August). It typically doesn't require any fertilizing during winter as they go dormant.

A high-quality Organic fertilizer will help avoid a mineral salt build-up in the potting mix that can damage the plant's roots.

Toxicity

Your ceropegia is non toxic and suitable for spaces with pets and children.

Additional Care

Rotate your plant periodically to ensure even growth on all sides

Dust the leaves often so your plant can photosynthesize efficiently.

The main issues you may face is either not enough sunlight or too much water, especially during winter.

Troubleshooting

String of Hearts wrinkling - Indicates your plant is being under-watered - Make sure to water them at least once a month

Curling up - May be caused by too little light or in rare cases a pest infection - Keep it somewhere it receives bright indirect sunlight.

Leaves yellowing - Indicates overwatering - Hold of watering until the soil is dry. This may also be caused by cold temperature. If so, keep them away from draughty places.
